Various minnow species exist for lake and pond stocking, but fathead minnows are recommended as a solid choice as for a forage species. Fathead minnows stocked at about 1,000 per acre the first year of a new or renovated pond will improve bass survival and growth. It is recommended that fatheadsĀ be stocked in February or March, beforeĀ bass are stocked in June.
Fatheads will spawn and produce abundant forage for the young bass. Bass will eliminate the fatheads within a few months and then turn to bluegill for forage.
